about

An anonymous duo split up by border control between Melbourne and London, with an axe to proverbially grind. Blightcaster takes its name from Magic: The Gathering but its affinity with the fantasy trading card game stops there. Or that’s at least if you think fantasy can’t also be a nightmare. The mostly recorded, rarely live noise, gorenoise, power electronics, hardstyle (etc.) band began in the dank privacy of a southeast London basement in 2016, before being cut short by an expired visa and a return to Australia for one of its members.

A handful of years and a global pandemic later, the two had the opportunity to finish their work remotely, sending files between countries and ruminating on the rotten core of a world that has only gotten rottener. Tracks like “Hymns from the Slaughterhouse”, “Disgraced Species” and “Devastator Slug” wheeze, croak and crackle with swells of extreme distortion. “Mind Unleashed” and “Weaponised Banter” offer a pounding though heavily degraded gabber in a barely melodic turn that you would never detect in the goregrind comparison of a band like Last Day of Humanity or Agents of Abhorrence’s contemporary grindcore.

Recorded using whatever they had with limited skills, Blightcaster is the no-fi product of sessions with a broken laptop, cracked software, a cheap synth and buggy contact mic. And while the duo’s own nihilism denies having a message, you might make one out in the blood-curdling shrieks and crunching beats of “Miserable, Mediocre, Nothing”. If ‘inspired' is the wrong word to use, Blightcaster are at least informed by the likes of labels like Self Abuse, Blood 'n' Guts, Head Fuck and Shit Wank Records. There are samples from survival horror games like Manhunt and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, but also from the meme zeitgeist; such as the 'Small, Angry Man Yells at Trumpet Player' youtube video. This is the sound of life in the crumbling hell-realm of reality, where ruin and plague meet magic.
